2008 Peregrini Trip to Heifer International’s Overlook Farm

This year Saint Peter’s adults and teens have a wonderful educational opportunity available to them by participating in the Peregrini Group trip to Overlook Farm in western Massachusetts. The trip will take place August 11 through 14.

Overlook Farm is Heifer International’s educational and outreach facility, with a mission to work in partnership with others to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth by:

·         Promoting awareness of Heifer Project International, hunger and poverty issues and the role of sustainable agriculture in successful development.

·         Providing experiential education programs that empower and inspire people to take action to create a sustainable, socially just, economically viable and environmentally sound world.

This experience will have the Saint Peter’s group participating in chores, service projects, and educational activities designed with the above mission statements in mind. A highlight of the stay will be an overnight experience in one of the global villages that have been created at Overlook Farm. The group will be divided into “families” who will then have the opportunity to live like a family in that particular developing nation. They will do chores, purchase food and cook meals, and sleep in conditions similar to the way families live in their country. Options for the global village experience include Thailand, Tibet, Kenya, Peru, and Guatemala. Two other options include living in a Mexican border town or in Appalachia.

This is not a wilderness camping experience. When not participating in the global village overnight, the group will stay in a bunk house. The accommodations also include bathrooms with showers. The cost is $135/person for the Overlook Farm experience, including all meals.  Depending on how big the group we have, there may be additional fees to help cover transportation and snacks for the trip. This trip is suitable for teens entering grade 8 and above. Parents or grandparents need not accompany their own teens however we do need adults for chaperones and drivers. Teens are also encouraged to bring a friend.

A sign-up sheet will be posted in the parish hall. For further information, contact Diane Clark (655-2308) or Holly Chanatry (655-9878).
